Capacity depends on the age of the gearbox, I think. The older boxes had an "added" fifth gear which was slightly above the rest and needed a bit more oil for lubrication. I had an '86 Talbot which used 2.7 litres.
devon. Aug 19, 2011. #2. Welcome to the Ducato gearbox club. Try looking at the speedo cable drive, the plastic gear wears allowing it to push up and leak oil. i had this on my 1.9TD camper. Did the speedo needle waver or tick prior to this? If it is this then it is easy to replace. If not then back to plan A.

The gearbox has 2 chambers as 5th was an afterthought by Fiat. The best way to fill the box is remove the reversing light switch and fill the box through the hole. This will make sure both chambers are full. Am now using semi-synthetic gear oil, much smoother change.

FIAT DUCATO II Ducato 2.8JTD 2005 Gearbox Oil Breather. Whilst carrying out the annual MOT the garage mechanic pointed out oil on the outside of the gearbox casing an said in passing that it would probably be the gearbox oil breather pipe blocked forcing gearbox oil around the oil seals to relieve the pressure.
Still having problems hunting down 75W85 GL4 synthetic gearbox oil. Several retailers now have each said just use 75W80 GL4 synthetic, as that's what their databases say is the right gearbox oil for a year 2001 2.8JTD Fiat Ducato. That's the grade that they reckon everyone/every garage uses for that make/model of van.
