In Guild Wars 2, you can create up to 5 Characters if you have bought any version of the game, or up to 2 if you are free to play. Additional character slots can be bought later in game. There are 5 races to choose from: Charr; Norn; Sylvari; Asura; Human; Character race determines a set number of skills (6 race-specific skills to be exact).
Game is by no means dead/maintenance mode. Hell most sub based mmos are more “maintenance mode” between major updates then GW2 and you pay to play that ded game monthly. In short no GW2 or 3 and beyond should not be monthly sub based, they make more of gem shop then they could possibly make off sub anyhow.
Either expansion will unlock masteries (including Core Tyria) for you when you reach level 80 and do the first expansion story step. The story for both expansions require a level 80 character. The story chronologically takes place later than personal story or season 1-2. But that doesn't mean you have to do all of the story in order.
To represent a guild, open the guild panel. On the sidebar, the "Account Guilds" tab list of all guilds your account is a member of. Select one and then click the "Represent" checkbox to the left of the guild name. You must do this individually for each character, since joining a guild does not automatically require you to represent it.
