Horrible Server lag. Howdy, I'm an old Veteran player from way back in 2012 that has recently come back after a 4 year hiatus. Yes you can change if you want to. On the character select screen there's a button in the bottom left corner which says World Selection. That brings up a list of all the servers in your region, and there's a drop-down box in the top right corner to switch to the other region.
at character select. Bottom Left of screen there is a world selection button. Select that, then select your friends world, Cost in gems will show up, if you have the gems and are ok with the cost click transfer. when you click * choose world * in your character select screen there ia a tab to switch between na and eu servers. im from ireland

From there you can pick a world to move to. It will move all of your characters and everything else on your account together. You have to pay for the transfer (in gems) and the price depends on the population of the world you're moving to. Unfortunately however there are no Australian or SEA servers, only NA and EU.
I saw this on a twitch stream chat last night, but apparently you can launch your non-Steam GW2 account on Steam if you type "-provider Portal" into Launch Options (in Steam library right click Guild Wars 2 -> General -> Launch Option). The more active servers will be in T1/T2. This is accurate if the server has around the clock coverage. While an NA server with big queues during their prime time can be great for large scale fights; if they don't have coverage for the 2/3rd of the day (SEA and EU timezones) the opposing servers could easily catch up and beat them in victory points by the end of the week.
As long as you are not on the Steam version, making a new account is the only way while keeping it free. If you consider paying for a transfer, that would be around 10 to 20 gold, at which point getting the cheapest upgrade is a better way, you'd have one free transfer as a result. For Steam, I do not know of possible free solutions.

Nowadays the game uses mega servers with so called shards. So a world and the one you choose is of no real consequences. Guesting means you guest to another homeworld, but as your homeworld is of no real consequence, guesting is even less. Homeworlds do two things nowadays.1: WvW.
Give up on the full servers they don't work like most other mmos as is only wvw that matters for the servers and unless the servers that are full takes a dip in active players in wvw then they are gonna stay full. Also i don't think free accounts can do world transfers.
About 4 or 5 years ago I got a character to 80 and played a lot of WvW but due to my pc being trash and school I had to stop. Now that I have a decent PC I decided to give it another try and the best way to do so was making a brand new account and starting from scratch (I will buy all three expansions as soon as I hit 80).

Yeah regions can matters a lot more than servers. DE in that case most likely means you joined a german server. If you have the free to play version I'd think about creating a new account. A server change is possible but it's roughly 10-20$ in gems, so not really worth it if you just started out and didn't buy the expansions right away.
